Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

CNG is a Fossil Fuel comprised of 87 to 92 percent of methane and is one of the cleanest burning fuel. A natural gas that has been compressed at 200 to 250 bar pressure, which remains clear and non-corrosive. It’s an alternate fuel to Diesel, petrol and Black oil. Against diesel, CNG is 45 to 50 % cheaper (depending on customer’s location). CNG on wheels act as a virtual pipeline for the consumers. It is primarily composed of methane and is stored and distributed in a compressed form. CNG Production

Natural Gas Extraction

The production of CNG begins with the extraction of natural gas from underground reservoirs. Natural gas is found in deep underground rock formations or associated with other hydrocarbon reservoirs in coal beds and shale formations. The extraction process involves drilling wells and using various techniques to bring the gas to the surface.

Processing

Once extracted, natural gas is processed to remove impurities and by-products, such as water vapor, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and other hydrocarbons. This processing typically involves several steps:

  • Separation: Removing liquid hydrocarbons and water.
  • Dehydration: Removing water vapor using glycol dehydration or other drying methods.
  • Sweetening: Removing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.
  • Fractionation: Separating different hydrocarbon components.

Compression

After processing, natural gas is compressed to high pressures (typically 200-250 bar or 2,900-3,600 psi) to reduce its volume for storage and transportation. This is done using industrial-grade compressors designed to handle high pressures and maintain the purity of the gas.

CNG is stored in high-pressure cylinders or tanks, which can be stationary (fixed at a fueling station or facility) or mobile (onboard vehicles). The storage methods include:

  • Cylinder Storage: CNG is stored in cylindrical tanks made of steel, aluminum, or composite materials. These cylinders are designed to withstand high pressures and are equipped with safety features.
  • Storage Cascades: A series of interconnected cylinders used at fueling stations to store large volumes of CNG. Cascades allow for efficient filling of vehicles by maintaining pressure levels.

Distribution Infrastructure

Transportation

In addition to pipelines, CNG can be transported using mobile storage units, such as tube trailers and ISO containers. These methods are useful for areas not served by pipelines or for emergency supplies:

  • Tube Trailers: Large trailers with multiple high-pressure cylinders used to transport CNG over long distances.
  • ISO Containers: Standardized containers designed for transporting CNG by road, rail, or sea.
